West Lafayette, Indiana neighborhoods

We pour all over West Lafayette, from the older lots near campus to the newer subdivisions at the edge of town and out toward the county line. A few of the neighborhoods we work in:

  • New Chauncey
  • Hills and Dales
  • Happy Hollow
  • Wabash Shores
  • Northwestern Heights
  • Glenwood Heights
  • Avondale
  • Park Ridge
  • Peppermill Village
  • Prophets Ridge
  • Camelback
  • Arbor Chase
  • Amberleigh Village
  • Bar Barry Heights
  • Plaza Park
  • Sugar Hill

New Chauncey is the city's only designated local historic district, and Hills and Dales and Happy Hollow Heights are on the National Register. Older neighborhoods tend to mean tighter access, mature trees and roots near the slab, and existing concrete that has to come out first. Newer subdivisions tend to mean longer drives, HOA rules on finishes and widths, and fill soil that needs a careful look before we pour. Either way, we'll walk the site before we give you a number.

Lafayette, Otterbein and the rest of the county

Outside West Lafayette we work in Lafayette, Battle Ground, Otterbein, Dayton, Shadeland and the unincorporated parts of Tippecanoe County, Indiana, including farms and acreage where pole barn floors and long drives are the job. If you're near the county line and not sure, call and ask.

Who issues permits in Tippecanoe County, Indiana

Permits follow the property line and the city line. This is the short version, based on each office's own website. Requirements change, so confirm with the office before you plan around it.

Patios and slabs on private property

West Lafayette's building permit page lists new construction, structural changes and electrical work. It doesn't mention flatwork either way, and it asks you to call the Building Department if you're unsure. That's the right move for a patio or slab, especially one near a property line or easement.

Incorporated towns can add their own steps. Shadeland's permit checklist, for example, includes a $50 driveway permit paid to the town.

Sidewalks and snow

In West Lafayette, the owner or occupant next to a sidewalk is responsible for clearing snow and ice within six hours after daylight once a snowfall ends. If you're replacing a public walk in front of your house, the work is in the right-of-way and goes through City Engineering. See sidewalks and steps for what that involves.

Questions we hear a lot

Do you come out to rural parts of the county?

Yes. Pole barn floors, shop slabs and long drives out in the county are a regular part of the work. The truck needs a way in, so tell us about soft ground, low wires or a narrow lane when you call.

My house is in New Chauncey. Does that change anything?

It can. New Chauncey is West Lafayette's only designated local historic district, and the city routes historic district questions to the Department of Development at (765) 775-5160. Call them before you plan anything visible from the street. Most back-yard flatwork is straightforward, but it's worth the phone call.

Who handles permits if I live outside city limits?

The Tippecanoe County Building Commission covers most of the county outside Lafayette and West Lafayette, at (765) 423-9225. A new drive onto a county road also needs a permit from the County Highway Department, (765) 423-9210. Incorporated towns can add their own steps.

Do I really need to call 811 for a patio?

If anyone is digging, yes. Indiana law requires notice to Indiana 811 at least two full working days before digging starts, and that includes setting forms and digging out for a base. Call 811 or file a ticket online. It's free, and it's how you avoid hitting a gas or electric line.
